The conventional playbook for winning office involves relying either on big moneyed interests or the angriest and most extreme fringes of our society. Of course, political campaigns are not just a game. Our elected officials heed in office those they need on the campaign trail, so the full force of our federal government—whether setting policy for our economy, our environment, or our security—can be bought by the highest bidder or held hostage by hysteria. But our society is undergoing massive technological, demographic, and socioeconomic shifts, and what it takes to win is changing. The Pluribus Project is working with leading campaign operatives, tech innovators, and political scientists to conduct early-stage research and development so that we can cultivate an alternative campaign playbook that relies more on everyday people. In this session we will explore some of the most promising opportunities for helping ensure our next generation of politicians need, and ultimately heed, a broader cross-section of the public.
