The Thinking Machine

In less than a generation, artificial intelligence has morphed from a science fiction-relegated fantasy to daily reality — enhancing our ability to learn, work, communicate, travel, and more. Increasingly, algorithm-driven systems are running highly complex tasks like piloting planes, controlling manufacturing lines, and executing trades on US markets. And still, AI has enormous unfulfilled potential to change our world, already outwitting humans in challenges from strategic gaming to medical diagnosis. What’s unclear is how prepared we are to react to the consequences of machine intelligence. Are we equipped to respond to a population displaced by automated work? Should we yield split-second decisions to unmanned vehicles and autonomous weaponry? What are the consequences of minimizing the role of women and people of color in the design of AI? Who regulates AI, and are we able to pull the plug if things get out of hand?
