Co-Chief Art Critic, The New York Times

Roberta Smith has written art criticism for The New York Times since October 1986 and became co-chief art critic there in 2004. She worked on the Donald Judd catalogue raisonné and has contributed essays to museum exhibition catalogs on Judd, Alex Katz, Elizabeth Murray, Jennifer Bartlett, and Cy Twombly. Smith was the art critic for The Village Voice from 1981 to 1985, and in the 1970s, wrote for Artforum, Art in America, and Arts Magazine. She has lectured widely, been a visiting critic at many art schools, and taught at the School of Visual Arts, NYC and the Rhode Island School of Design. Smith received the 2019 Dorothea and Leo Rabkin Lifetime Achievement Award.
