Marshall Summar is chief of the Division of Genetics and Metabolism at Children’s National Health System and Margaret O’Malley Chair of Genetic Medicine. He works on both devices and treatments for patients with genetic and biochemical diseases, adapting knowledge from rare diseases to mainstream medicine, and his work has resulted in new drugs in FDA trials for patients with congenital heart disease and premature birth. Summar’s current research focuses on the interactions between common genetic variations and the environment, involving research in heart disease, asthma, pulmonary hypertension, oxidant injury and aging, Down syndrome, and liver disease. Summar is active in newborn screening and telemedicine efforts to reach underserved areas. (Festival Underwriter Presenter)
