John Hamre is CEO of the Center for Strategic and International Studies, since 2000. Prior to this, he was US deputy secretary of defense and the undersecretary of defense. Hamre was previously chairman of the Defense Policy Board, where he served under four secretaries of defense. Before his time at the Department of Defense, he spent 10 years on Capitol Hill as a professional staff member of the Senate Armed Services Committee overseeing procurement, research and development programs, defense budget issues, and relations with the Senate Appropriations Committee. Earlier in his career, Hamre was deputy assistant director for national security and international affairs in the Congressional Budget Office.
