Gina McCarthy is the national climate advisor to the White House, appointed to this new position by President Biden in January 2021. She was previously president and CEO of the Natural Resources Defense Council and a professor at the Harvard T.H. Chan School of Public Health, where she led its new Center for Climate, Health, and the Global Environment. From 2013 to 2017, McCarthy was EPA administrator, overseeing efforts to reduce greenhouse gasses, mitigate air pollution, and conserve water sources. She spearheaded the Obama-Biden administration’s Clean Power Plan and helped pave the way for the Paris Agreement. McCarthy has advised five administrations of Massachusetts governors on environmental matters and was commissioner of the Connecticut Department of Environmental Protection.
