David Cole is the national legal director of the American Civil Liberties Union, where he oversees the organization’s Supreme Court docket, 1,400 state and federal lawsuits, and 300 ACLU staff attorneys. He’s the Honorable George J. Mitchell Professor in Law and Public Policy at Georgetown University Law Center, where he taught on faculty from 1990 to 2016. Previously, he was a staff attorney for the Center for Constitutional Rights. Cole has litigated many cases in the US Supreme Court and can claim multiple constitutional legal victories. He is the author of ten books, including the latest, Engines of Liberty: How Citizen Movements Succeed. His honors include the Norman Dorsen Presidential Prize from the ACLU and the American Book Award.
