Camila Sanmiguel is a student poet in the Creative Young Leaders Alliance, a program of the Aspen Institute that provides mentorship and training to the next generation of young arts leaders. The 2017 National Student Poet for the Southwest and a second-generation Mexican American, she sees poetry and her work as a way to appeal to human emotions, understand diverse groups of people, and advocate for others through literary activism. As a national student poet, Sanmiguel worked with first- and second-generation immigrants and refugees in Texas, promoting poetry and bibliotherapy as forms of healing and expression. A prospective law student, she is an intern at US District Court in southern Texas.
