The Meaning of Mutations: Will Your Vaccine Still Work?

Scott Gottlieb, former head of the FDA, speaks with Ken Davis, president of Mount Sinai Health System.

Will your vaccine protect you from the Covid variants?

The coronavirus is mutating rapidly at the same time people around the world are getting vaccinated. Will the vaccines protect us from the variants? Scott Gottlieb, former head of the FDA, talks with Mount Sinai Health System President Ken Davis about the implications of the virus’ mutations for vaccines already in people’s arms. We know the vaccines are very effective —from 66 percent to 95 percent, depending on the technology — against the original coronavirus that causes COVID-19. But how do they stack up against the new variants? Gottlieb shares a likely timeline for FDA approval of what he calls the “variant vaccines,” and expands on the relevancy of booster shots for protection against the virus in the years to come.
