Sebastien Lai is the leader of the international #FreeJimmyLai campaign. His father, Jimmy Lai, is a Hong Kong media entrepreneur and pro-democracy campaigner who was imprisoned in December 2020 under the Chinese government’s national security law and put on trial three years later. Jimmy Lai is the founder of Next Digital and Apple Daily, an independent Chinese-language newspaper that was shut down by Hong Kong authorities in 2021. In December 2021, Sebastien Lai accepted the 2021 World Association of News Publishers (WAN-IFRA) Golden Pen of Freedom award on behalf of his father and the Apple Daily newsroom staff. He has been meeting with politicians and diplomats, attending events and speaking out worldwide about his father’s case.
