Due to the breadth of certain topics, three program tracks will offer conversations across both Fest 1 and Fest 2. Additionally, focused attention will be given to four different subjects during each half of the Festival. Spotlight: Health kicks off the week as a focused, two-and-a-half day forum.

We can't build healthy societies only by providing health care, even if we manage to improve the quality of that care and make it accessible to all. Real transformation happens when we start to see health as a unifying principle in decision making. We are moving towards a richer understanding of the universal elements of design, ingredients that belong in any context regardless of geography, culture, or resources. How do we reimagine our communities to make them healthier places to live, learn, work, and play?
Design gives health a bigger tent to find the answers, one that brings together public and private players from many fields, folks who use different idioms, act on different motives, and ask different questions. How do we talk about the connective tissue linking health with poverty, education, jobs, and community safety? How do we integrate health with disciplines concerned about urban planning, rural development, climate change, and food security?
How can we build hospitals, clinics, and public health infrastructure to meet evolving needs? What health-generating products can we bring to scale between now and 2024 – from durable microscopes for detecting TB and malaria to safe latrines for women in refugee camps? Moving into other public spheres, how can the arts be used to promote better health in high-conflict societies? Are there opportunities to use the psychology of design to change behavior? When do laws to protect the public health violate cultural or religious beliefs, or the right to personal autonomy?
