Our arts and culture inevitably define us, and often lead us into the future. They are intertwined in our lives in a myriad of ways — what will the art(s) world be in 2024, and how will it affect us all?
Innovation. Collaboration. Creativity. These are the trademarks of the arts. Can they also be the trademarks of our world in 2024? How will the arts help build the necessary habits of mind for collaborative and creative risk-taking, supplying the ideas and workforce of the future?
In ten years, who will we be? Will we be remembered the way we want? In a time of short-term gratification, can the arts help us to progress by requiring more than our brief attention? Will we build empathy through culture, creating common ground, and new community in our increasingly diverse country? Will the arts challenge the belief systems that cause bitter divisions among us? Can we be who we need to be to face our most pressing long-term challenges?
What will the arts look and sound like a decade from now? After all, a decade ago YouTube didn’t exist. Nor did the ubiquitous touch screens and handheld interactive displays that are now our almost permanent appendages. How will the fast pace of technology change the way we see, hear, feel, and experience art? And how will the arts maintain our humanity in this on-demand world?
