Vali Nasr is dean of Johns Hopkins University’s School of Advanced International Studies and a fellow at the Brookings Institution. He is a member of the State Department’s Foreign Affairs Policy Advisory Board. Between 2009 and 2011, he served as senior advisor to the late Richard Holbrooke, US special representative for Afghanistan and Pakistan. Nasr is also a Middle East scholar and commentator on international relations. His most recent books include The Dispensable Nation: American Foreign Policy in Retreat and the New York Times best-seller, The Shia Revival: How Conflicts within Islam Will Shape the Future. He is a frequent contributor to The New York Times and other media.
