
Richard Haass
President, Council on Foreign Relations
Richard Haass is president of the Council on Foreign Relations, since 2003. A veteran diplomat, he was previously senior Middle East advisor to President George H.W. Bush and director of the US State Department’s policy planning staff, advising Colin Powell. Haass has also been US coordinator for Afghanistan policy and US envoy to the Cyprus and Northern Ireland peace talks. The author or editor of 14 books, most on US foreign policy, his latest is A World in Disarray: American Foreign Policy and the Crisis of the Old Order. Haass is the recipient of the State Department’s Distinguished Honor Award, the Presidential Citizens Medal, and the Tipperary International Peace Award.
