ALS Patient; Right to Try Act Advocate
Matt Bellina is an ALS patient and advocate for legislation legalizing the use of experimental treatments. A husband and father of three, he was diagnosed at age 30 in 2014, though he had shown symptoms as early as 2006. Bellina is a retired lieutenant commander in the US Navy, having trained to become a naval aviator after graduating from Virginia Tech in 2005. He and his family advocated for the Right to Try bill, signed into law in May 2018, which allows terminally ill patients with no other options to request experimental treatments. Thanks to the bill’s passage, Bellina uses Nurown, a stem cell therapy from pharmaceutical company Brainstorm.
