Lawrence Summers is the Charles W. Eliot University Professor and president emeritus of Harvard University, where he is Weil Director of the Mossavar-Rahmani Center for Business and Government at Harvard’s Kennedy School. He previously served as vice president of development economics and chief economist of the World Bank, director of the National Economic Council for the Obama administration, and secretary of the US Treasury under President Clinton. Summers is the recipient of the 1993 John Bates Clark Medal, given to outstanding American economists under the age of 40, and the National Science Foundation’s Alan T. Waterman Award for outstanding scientific achievement, the first social scientist to receive it.
