Kelly McBride is vice president of the Poynter Institute. On the faculty since 2002, she has been Poynter’s vice president of academic programs and head of the Ethics Department and the Reporting, Writing and Editing Department. McBride directed Poynter’s Sense-Making Project, examining the transformation of journalism, the values of the Fifth Estate, and technology’s effects on democracy. She served as ESPN’s ombudsman from 2011 to 2013, co-edited The New Ethics of Journalism: Principles for the 21st Century, and co-hosts the “Everyday Ethics” podcast. Leading newsrooms seek her advice for internal decisions and quote her in stories. McBride began her career as a reporter in the Pacific Northwest for 15 years.
