Karl Eikenberry is the William J. Perry Fellow in International Security at the Center for International Security and Cooperation and a Distinguished Fellow at Stanford University’s Shorenstein Asia-Pacific Research Center. He served as US ambassador to Afghanistan from 2009 to 2011 following a 35-year career in the US Army, including commander of the American-led coalition forces from 2005 to 2007. Eikenberry received the George F. Kennan Award for Distinguished Public Service and Harvard University Graduate School of Arts and Sciences Centennial Medal. He is a trustee for the International Institute for Strategic Studies, The Asia Foundation, and the National Committee on American Foreign Policy.
