John Deasy

Superintendent, Los Angeles Unified School District

John Deasy is superintendent of the Los Angeles Unified School District, the nation’s second largest school district with more than 600,000 students, where he focuses on protecting students’ rights to high-quality education while handling the budget crisis caused by underfunding. Deasy was previously deputy director of education for the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation and superintendent of Prince George’s County (Maryland) Public Schools, the Santa Monica-Malibu Unified School District, and Coventry Public Schools in Rhode Island. A consultant to school districts undertaking reform, he has been a Broad Fellow, an Annenberg Fellow, and a State Superintendent of the Year.
