Joan Salwen

Co-Founder and CEO, Blue Ocean Barns

Joan Salwen is CEO of Blue Ocean Barns, which makes an all-natural, red seaweed-based digestive aid and mineral supplement for cows that eliminates their methane-burp emissions. She previously founded Elm Innovations, a nonprofit platform exploring the potential of the seaweed-livestock connection, and then co-founded Blue Ocean as the commercial engine for it. Prior to this, Salwen worked at Stanford University, where she built a team that energized university, market, and government interest in red seaweed as a solution to climate change. Raised on a farm in Iowa, she was for 20 years a managing director at Accenture, leading the firm’s Atlanta practice for organization and change strategy, and helped found Atlanta Girls’ School, where she taught and was head of school.
