Helen Gao is a freelance writer on China-related issues, with particular focus on education, censorship, and nationalism. Her work has appeared in publications such as The New York Times, Foreign Policy, Foreign Affairs, the UK’s Prospect magazine, and Dissent magazine. Gao worked as an editorial assistant at The Atlantic from June 2011 to November 2012. She has also worked as a news assistant at The New York Times and a researcher at Newsweek. She grew up in Beijing, received her BA in economics from Yale University, and is currently a graduate student in East Asian studies at Harvard University.
