Fred Upton has represented southwest Michigan’s 6th congressional district in Congress since 1986. He is chair of the Committee on Energy and Commerce with jurisdiction over energy, health care, the environment, telecommunications, commerce, manufacturing, and trade as well as oversight and investigations. He has long pushed for a greater emphasis on biomedical research to improve the public health. In 2014, he and Rep. Diana DeGette launched the 21st Century Cures initiative, a multi-year effort to bring researchers, industry and patients together to speed up the discovery, development, and delivery of life-saving cures. In the early 1980s, Upton worked in the Office of Management and Budget under President Ronald Reagan.
