Edward Mabaya

Associate Director, Cornell International Institute for Food, Agriculture and Development

Edward Mabaya is associate director of Cornell International Institute for Food, Agriculture, and Development and a research associate at Cornell’s Charles H. Dyson School of Applied Economics and Management. His research focuses on food marketing and distribution, seed systems, and GMO crops. Mabaya grew up in a Zimbabwean smallholder family that scraped by growing subsistence crops, then experienced rapid income growth after improved seeds and chemical fertilizers were introduced in the early 1980s. He believes agriculture is thepathway out of poverty for most of Africa’s people. Mabaya was selected as an Archbishop Desmond Tutu Leadership fellow in 2007 and is currently an Aspen Institute New Voices fellow.
