Executive Director, Lost Bird Project; Co-Inventor, SmartPhin
Andrew Stern is co-inventor of Smartphin, a surfboard fin engineered to collect near-shore ocean data. As surfers move through the water, their Smartphins simultaneously measure temperature, salinity, pH, location, and wave energy. The technology was developed with the help of an XPRIZE grant and Benjamin Thompson, an avid surfer and engineer. Stern is executive director of The Lost Bird Project, a nonprofit with the mission to connect people more closely to the environment through art. He practiced medicine in Rochester, NY, with Neurology Associates of Rochester for 24 years and is currently an associate professor of neurology at the University of Rochester.
