Shabana Basij-Rasikh is co-founder and managing director of School of Leadership, Afghanistan, a nonprofit that helps young women access education worldwide and jobs back home. It’s the only girls’ boarding school in Afghanistan. Born and raised in Kabul, Basij-Rasikh finished high school in the United States and graduated from Middlebury College in 2011. She founded HELA, a nonprofit that empowers Afghan women through education. She raised funds to build a girls’ high school in her ancestral village and wells in the Kabul outskirts.
