Nicholas Dirks

Chancellor, University of California, Berkeley

Nicholas Dirks is chancellor of the University of California, Berkeley. Before coming to Berkeley in 2013, he was executive vice president for the arts and sciences and faculty dean at Columbia University, which he joined in 1997 as chair of the anthropology department. Dirks was previously a professor of history and anthropology at University of Michigan and taught Asian history and civilization at California Institute of Technology. His scholarly honors include a MacArthur Foundation residential fellowship at the Institute for Advanced Study at Princeton, a Guggenheim Fellowship, and the Lionel Trilling Award for his book Castes of Mind.
