Mimi Ito

is associate researcher at the University of California, Irvine, with with appointments at the Humanities Research Institute, the Department of Anthropology, and the Department of Informatics. She is a cultural anthropologist, who examines young people’s changing relationships to media and communications. Her books include Hanging Out, Messing Around, and Geeking Out: Youth Living and Learning with New Media (MIT Press, 2009), Engineering Play: A Cultural History of Children’s Software (MIT Press, 2009), and Personal, Portable, Pedestrian: Mobile Phones in Japanese Life (MIT Press, 2005). She is research director of the Digital Media and Learning Hub.
