Katie Salen

Katie Salen is executive director of The Institute of Play and a professor at DePaul University. The Institute of Play is a nonprofit focused on games and learning. Salen is former director of the Center for Transformative Media, a research center focused on emerging trends in design and media. She locates her work in the field of game design and serves as executive director of the team that founded Quest to Learn, a new 6th-to-12th-grade public school in New York City, as well as ChicagoQuest, a charter school opening this fall. As the lead designer on ChicagoQuest, she led development of the school’s pedagogical vision and research agenda. Salen is co-author of Rules of Play, a textbook on game design, and The Game Design Reader, and editor of The Ecology of Games: Connecting Youth, Games, and Learning.
