Kathryn Sullivan is undersecretary of commerce for oceans and atmosphere and NOAA administrator, confirmed by the US Senate in March 2014. A scientist and astronaut, her previous Commerce Department positions include assistant secretary for environmental observation and prediction and NOAA acting administrator, deputy administrator, and chief scientist. Sullivan was previously director of Ohio State University’s Battelle Center for Mathematics and Science Education Policy, president and CEO of the Center of Science and Industry, and one of the first six women to join the NASA astronaut corps in 1978, holding the distinction of first American woman to walk in space. She is US co-chair of the Group on Earth Observations.
