Congressman, Georgia's 5th District (D), US House of Representatives; Chairman 1963-1966, Student Nonviolent Coordinating Committee

John Lewis is the US representative for Georgia’s 5th congressional district (D), serving since 1987. A longtime civil rights leader, he organized sit-ins and participated in the first Freedom Rides as a college student, was chairman of the Student Nonviolent Coordinating Committee and the youngest speaker at the 1963 March on Washington, and was a leader of the 1965 Selma–Montgomery March. Lewis recently received the Presidential Medal of Freedom. His books include Walking with the Wind: A Memoir of the Movement; Across that Bridge: Life Lessons and a Vision for Change; and a graphic novel memoir, March: Book One.
