Joan Harris

Joan Harris is a philanthropist, arts activist, and former commissioner of the department of cultural affairs for the city of Chicago. She chairs the Irving Harris Foundation, a private family foundation that funds programs, policies, research, and organizations supporting early childhood initiatives, as well as the arts and humanities and Jewish philanthropy. She founded the Cultural Policy Center at the University of Chicago and has served in leadership roles in the arts throughout her life, including president of the Chicago Opera Theater and the Illinois Arts Alliance. She has also served on the President’s Commission for the National Endowment for the Arts.
