James L. Brooks is an Academy Award-winning screenwriter, director, and producer. He began his television career as a writer who went on to produce television hits including "Taxi", "The Mary Tyler Moore Show", "Rhoda", "Lou Grant", "The Tracey Ullman Show", and "The Simpsons." Brooks began working in film in 1979 when he wrote the screenplay for Starting Over. His next project was Terms of Endearment, which he produced, directed, and wrote, winning an Oscar for all three positions. He has won 19 Emmy Awards.
