He has served as president of the Executive Committee of the Copper Exporting Countries Organization, as CEO of Universal Engineering Corporation, as a principal of the Swiss Bank Corporation Consultant Group, and as a governor of Peruâ€™s Central Reserve Bank. De Soto is the author of two books, including The Mystery of Capital: Why Capitalism Triumphs in the West and Fails Everywhere Else (Basic Books, 2000). De Soto has received many awards, including the Adam Smith Award, Templeton Freedom Prize, Milton Friedman Prize for Advancing Liberty, and the Bradley Prize.
