Edward S. Steinfeld is a professor of political science and the dean’s chair in China studies at Brown University. He directs the Brown China Initiative, a research effort uniting scholars in the social sciences, physical sciences, and engineering disciplines in the study of Chinese development and global sustainability. Steinfeld’s research is on Chinese industrial development; he has over two decades published work on Chinese state enterprise restructuring, Chinese industrial participation in global production networks, and Chinese commercial innovation and technology development. He is the author of the books Playing Our Game: Why China’s Rise Doesn’t Threaten the West and Forging Reform in China: The Fate of State-Owned Industry.
