Warning: Technology Might Be Hazardous to Your Health

There can be little argument that humans are benefiting greatly from wave after wave of technological advances. Routine and safe global travel, computers, tablets, smartphones and even smartwatches allow us to work and travel in ways that were unimagined a century ago. However, the contemporary human machine and in particular, the “circadian timing system” that regulates the sleep/wakefulness cycle and nearly every other hormonal and cellular rhythm in the body, evolved in a very different, relatively unchanging natural environment. Today, our elegant timing system is being regularly assaulted by technology. The presentation discusses the human circadian system, how it is impacted by modern technology and strategies to minimize the physiological impact of our busy lifestyles.
