The Transformative Power of Philanthropy

Philanthropy is playing a role as never before in tackling the challenges of health. Foundations have stepped in where governments have stepped aside, setting an agenda that often goes well beyond the traditional strategies employed in clinical medicine and public health. Typically more willing than other players to fund risk, foundations are also more insistent on accountability. Who is setting the agenda for the billions of philanthropic dollars now being spent on health? How is their work making a difference? Are foundations getting us to think about healthcare delivery in new ways?
