Energy is the foundation of every aspect of our lives. It has the ability to increase all Americans quality of life – powering our education, feeding our families and growing our communities. Discovering better ways to deliver clean, safe, reliable and affordable energy can no longer be an aspiration – it is essential for America to create jobs, increase personal incomes and improve lives.
Southern Company is leading this evolution by creating more efficient ways to provide energy and power our economy. Our entire workforce of 26,000 employees is dedicated to finding real solutions for customers through new ideas, methods and technologies. One visible example of this inventive mindset is our new Energy Innovation Center in Atlanta. This new center complements the daily commitment all of our employees have to innovation, and will serve as an incubator for better, more reliable and more efficient ways to deliver energy.
We are also collaborating with forward-looking companies like Tesla, Google and Nest to identify the best technologies from other industries and deliver them to customers. From exciting corporate partnerships to cutting-edge research alongside universities and other organizations, we will continue working hard every day to be an even better partner to customers and communities.
Meanwhile, our four operating companies that serve more than 4.5 million customers in the southeastern United States, are utilizing new technologies to diversify our energy sources – furthering industry innovation through our investments in the full energy portfolio. Georgia Power is building two of the first new nuclear units in a generation of Americans, featuring the newest, safest and most efficient nuclear technology available. Mississippi Power is constructing a 21st century coal gasification plant designed to use proprietary, first-of-its-kind technology that Southern Company and its partners developed. And we are increasing the role of renewable energy across the company – including being the only electric utility in the nation to partner with the US Army, the US Navy, US Marine Corps and the US Air Force to develop innovative energy projects both on and off base.
With a record of advancing technology that dates back to the 1960s, Southern Company is leading the U.S. electric industry in robust, proprietary research and development. Energy storage, carbon capture, and water resource management are among the critical areas receiving intense focus at dedicated one-of-a-kind research centers. Building on its strong tradition of providing common-sense solutions, Southern Company is inventing a bright future for the customers and communities we are honored to serve.
