forces (e.g., trauma) and intrinsic processes (e.g., aging, physical exercise).
• Describe mechanisms for original, systemic approaches to major medical and public health issues such as cancer,
maternal mortality, and potable water.
• Identify the social determinants of health, as these converge in the domains of public space (urban planning),
social justice (racial inequality), and governance (global security, environment).
• Assess the interface between the classic notion of health care (laying on of hands) and the increasingly sophisticated technology with which care is delivered, and how we might balance the imperatives of both in a manner that affirms our humanity.
