The Genetics Revolution

Just over a quarter century after the launch of the Human Genome Project, we face an unprecedented set of questions about how to be good guardians of the genome — a genome we can increasingly read, understand, and alter. CRISPR, the revolutionary gene editing technique taking the research world by storm, could hold the key to curing cancer. Or to understanding autism. But it also gives humans the power to drive permanent genetic change across an entire species, including our own. So how should we begin to weigh the promise of this knowledge with its perils? How would our understanding of what it means to be human change if our genetic code became less destiny and more design?
