Tom Frieden

President and CEO, Resolve to Save Lives; Former Director, Centers for Disease Control and Prevention

Tom Frieden is an infectious disease and public health physician and is currently president and CEO of Resolve to Save Lives, an initiative of the global health organization Vital Strategies, which aims to prevent both epidemics and cardiovascular disease. Frieden was director of the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention from 2009 to 2017 and led the response that helped end the Ebola epidemic. Prior to the CDC, Frieden was New York City health commissioner from 2002 to 2009, where he directed efforts to reduce teen and adult smoking and increase life expectancy. He previously led New York City’s program that cut multidrug-resistant tuberculosis by 80 percent, then helped build one in India. Frieden has advised governments and public health organizations, including the WHO and World Bank.
