
Mario Small
Mario Luis Small is professor and chair of the Sociology Department at the University of Chicago. Small’s research has focused on urban poverty, social capital, and inequality and culture. His latest book, Unanticipated Gains: Origins of Network Inequality in Everyday Life, which examined how the social networks of New York City mothers were affected by their children’s daycare centers, received several honors, including the C. Wright Mills Award. His earlier book, Villa Victoria: The Transformation of Social Capital in a Boston Barrio, a study of social capital in a Boston housing complex inhabited primarily by Puerto Rican immigrants, received numerous honors, including the C. Wright Mills Award and the Robert E. Park Award.
