Director, Rafik Hariri Center for the Middle East, Atlantic Council

Frederic Hof is director of the Atlantic Council’s Rafik Hariri Center for the Middle East. He joined the Atlantic Council after a career as a US Army officer, private sector CEO, and US Department of State diplomat, where he took the lead in mediating Syrian-Israeli peace. Hof took a 2001 private sector leave of absence to serve as chief of staff of the Sharm al-Sheikh Fact-Finding Commission and was the principal drafter of the commission’s report. A Vietnam veteran and military officer whose decorations include the Purple Heart, he served on the commission that investigated the 1983 bombing of the US Marine Corps headquarters at Beirut International Airport.
